The Wonders of Chicken Manure

Birdhouse Gourd Vine

Birdhouse Gourd Vine

I feel like this vine emerged from the compacted dirt of the chickens pen about a month ago.  On the 1st of October with a fresh dusting of snow on the mountains behind it, it is not far from touching the sky and reaching its tentacles six feet in either direction along its support.  It has one beautiful lime green gourd nestled in its leaves.  Last summer, I babied and prodded two bird house gourd plants through much rain and a little sun to get two small gourds.  I decided to fore-go the effort this year and lo and behold a rampant seed decided to go for it.  With its superior genes for thriving in this frigid fall and the help of a little chicken manure, this vine is, I must say, showing off.
