I have just completed my order. It is late, but the seeds should arrive just in time to start my onions. It is so much fun ordering seeds. In fact with catalogues piled around me and my seed spreadsheet laid out, I declared as if I had found a brand new pastime, “This is so much fun!” and my husband replied, “You say that every year”. Well, it does seem new and exciting each year.
This year I kept my seed buying strategy in tune with the rest of the country- minimalist. For flowers I bought only State Fair Zinnias and Blue Boy Bachelor Buttons. I know, this verges on boring, but I will clean out some of the back stock and maybe give myself a little more purchasing freedom at the farmer’s market and nurseries. All of my vegetables will be started from seed, though. I’ll share some of what I am excited about.
The old standbys, or rather can’t get through a summer without, are-
- Brandywine Tomato
- Sungold and Black Cherry Tomato
- Lipstick Pepper
- Provider Bush Bean
- French Fingerling Potato
- Super Thai Chili
There are a few newbies for me from last year, I am anxious to grow again-
- Gold Medal Tomato
- Federle Paste Tomato
- Yellow of Parma Onion
- Rosa Bianca Eggplant
And new for me this year-
- Cheddar Cauliflower
- Long Pie Pumpkin
- Rainbow Lacinato Kale
- Lazy Housewife Pole Bean (because if this bean could allow me to be lazy, I am all for it)
Most of my seed I am ordering from Fedco (http://www.fedcoseeds.com). I thoroughly enjoy their catalogue, from the political comments, tips and stories, to the honest seed descriptions. It is also filled with useful information like what type of company each variety of seed comes from. A few are coming from Seed Savers Exchange, (http://www.seedsavers.org), besides being a great organization, they have the most irresistible photos, High Mowing, (http://www.highmowingseeds.com), also a great company and very local for me, and Turtle Tree Gardens (http://www.turtletreeseed.com). That wraps it up for this year’s seed ordering. I am now waiting for those packages to arrive. I can smell potting soil already.
