Isn’t it Early?

Early Catalogs

Early Catalogs

We returned from an out of town, Thanksgiving trip a few nights ago to the notorious stack of mail on the dining room table.  I was shocked to find it peppered with seed catalogs!  I had already received two catalogs earlier in the month.  It is early, isn’t it?  In past years, I came back from our annual Christmas trip to those tempting pages.  It was an after the holidays treat.  After the flurry of fall garden work, after the baking, traveling, socializing, and gift giving, I would settle into January with a mug of hot coffee, snow softly falling outside my window, seed catalogs piled around me and dreams and visions of the most splendid garden yet.  And now here they are tempting me to sit down at the dining room table and dream when I have way too much to do elsewhere.

A farmer friend of mine commented that she had to start considering her seed order this fall.  Some of the more popular varities of seed among commercial growers sold out shortly after the catalogue came out.  I have the flexibility of a home gardener and so am tucking my seed catalogues away until the quiet of deep winter.  Oh and I am looking forward to it.
