State Fair Zinnia
My husband and I have the understanding that the vegetable garden comes first, flowers second. We are trying to grow the majority of our food. With a busy family life this order has to be. The first shovel of compost, manure and mulch straw gets dumped in the vegetable beds, as well as our time. The flower beds get the left overs, which is often only neglect. The neglect happens during the height of summer when everything is growing beautifully. Then the early summer blooms fade, the weeds see their chance and jump on it when my head is turned. It is a sorry thing, but often there is an overachiever that grows magnificently despite the obstacles. This year it was my zinnias. With some as tall as me, not a japanese beetle in site and weeds dwarfed in their shade, they are such a pleasure of perfection, color and height. Who would have thought?
